Yeah second what Aen said- Most of them kept to their own Nations. But I don't see why it wouldn't work like that? Just like how a bender and a non bender can have both bending children or non benders, why couldn't an Earth Bender and a Fire bender have one of each?

An old inter view with the creators said bending is part genetics part training. Like anything else some people are naturals and otthers have to work at it. And no you can't take a baby earth bender stick him in the water tribe and get a water bender it doesn't work that way.

Right but if you have two parents- one being earth and one being water- it is completely possible to have three children- one being a water bender, one being an earth bender and the last being a non-bender.

That is assuming bending is a recessive trait.

Even if it is a dominate trait- it would depend on which element would be considered dominate. I think Tenzin's children proove that the bending ability is a dominant trait- but of course I am assuming that his Wife came from a family of non benders. So this shows that her children inherited both the non-bending gene and the bending gene. Bending is dominate.
Now I'll go a little deeper. Say that She did come from a bending family- judging by her looks she would have had to have been Earth Kingdom (she couldn't possibly be from the Air Nomads since Aang was the last one before his children) So that would mean that she inherited an Earth Bending Gene from her parents, Tenzin would have inherited a Water Bending and an Air bending. In the wife- the bending gene was dormant because she was a non-bender. In Tenzin- the Air Bending gene became dominate there by rendering the water bending gene dormant. If we look at it that way then it is entirely possible for Tenzin's children to produce water, earth or air benders children in the distant future.
Ow...I hurt my head.

It would have to be recessive, because neither of Katara's parents were benders, so say both had Ww (big W being nonwaterbender) and Ww, then she got ww which made her a water bender and Sokka got WW or Ww. So we know AT LEAST Water Bending is recessive.

That isn't true though. There are anomolies where two parents with similiar dominate genes and similiar recessive genes pass on the recessive traits to the first born. Example- two brown eyed parents having a blue eyed offspring first and the next child having brown eyes. It just depends on what mixture of traits were passed down.
Oh and btw: their father was a waterbender.

No he wasn't. He was just a warrior.
And that is because blue eyes are a recessive trait, so two brown eyed parents who have heterozygus (Bb and Bb) can give birth to a baby with bb as the genetics for their eye color where B= Brown and b= blue.

Hakoda wasn't a waterbender though, and I don't think their mother was either. She lied to keep the fire nation from taking Katara away.

I could have sworn he was a waterbender. Hm. Okay so if it is a recessive trait, then why isn't Tenzin's wife- and Katara's parents who were non benders- why isn't their non bending dominant trait coming through in the children, rather than the recessive bending traits?
Even better question: Don't we have anything better to do and why are we looking this deep into a cartoon when the creators probably didn't put that much thought into it.

Katara doesn't have any dominant trait at all to pass onto her kids. (As least I think that's what you're asking)
And because we are creatures of analyzation, no matter how many people fight it. We need to see pattern where none may exist.

SO! WE HAVE DETERMINED WATER BENDING IS A RECESSIVE TRAIT! If anyone else would like to logic out some of the other bending so we can prove whether or not A fire-bender and an Earth-bender can be brothers...
