...and Happy Father's Day!
Two important dates that are happening in: a) the Philippines; and b) the world
Of course, everyone knows Father's day, the day of the year we honor our best male role model. But then again, we should do this everyday of the year, not just once...
As for Jose Rizal...I'm betting you guys don't know him, huh?
To put it in a nutshell, José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda is the Philippines' National Hero (he was actually in tie with Andres Bonifacio, leader of the Katipunan)
He was one of the leaders of the Reform Movement (La Liga Filipina) back when the Spaniards were the rulers of the Philippines. He, del Pilar and Ponce used poems and stories to tell the wicked actions that the Spanish friars and leaders were doing to the Filipinos. He was known mostly for his two most famous works, "Noli Mi Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo"
When the Spaniards found out about this and thought he was responsible for the revolts led by the Filipinos against them, he was locked up in Intramuros, where in a matter of days, he was to be executed in Bagumbayan. He wrote his last works there, which include "Mi Ultimo Adios".
On December 30, 1896, in front of Filipinos and Spaniards alike, he stood with his hands tied behind his back to a Spanish firing squad. He requested to face the firing squad while they were shooting him, but he was denied of it. Some say he obeyed, but some say he turned around at the last minute and faced his death.
That's pretty much all I can say/remember about the history of Jose Rizal (excuse me if my info is wrong). But he will always be a great hero who will be respected in our country. Of course, we have our other heroes, either credited or not, in the past and our modern day heroes!
